Update: Man killed by train in Winton

A man was killed Saturday after being struck by a train in the Winton area, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Delray Shelton said details are few about the death. The coroner’s office has identified the victim as Israel Perez, 39.

The death was reported at 7:45 a.m. Saturday on the Santa Fe tracks crossing Olive Avenue. Shelton said Perez was seen lying on the tracks and he was not moving as the train approached.

The case remains under investigation.
