Merced police accept applications for citizens academy

The Merced Police Department is accepting applications for the Citizens Police Academy.

The 11-week training and education program begins March 4, according to a department news release.

Chief Norman Andrade said the program helps residents gain a better understanding of the city’s Police Department and law enforcement in general. Officers also use the program to develop relationships with community members.

The department each year accepts 20 to 25 residents for the program.

“Each week the participants meet with department experts to learn about the various procedures, programs and specialty units within the Police Department,” the news release said.

Anyone interested in applying for the Citizens Police Academy can pick up an application at the Police Department, 611 W. 22nd St. Applications are also available online at the city website, www.cityofmerced.org. Completed applications may be delivered to the Police Department or faxed to (209) 388-7854.
