Golden Valley Health Centers has upgraded some of its technology with the goal of improving patient experience and safeguarding data.

The nonprofit health care system, which includes 21 clinical sites and nine dental sites in Merced and Stanislaus counties, underwent a significant boost in broadband speed from Comcast Business Services earlier this month.

With the upgrade, the clinics moved from Internet speeds of 1.5 Mbps to nearly 100 Mbps.

GVHC should experience a more stable and efficient connection with the new setup, according to a Comcast Business news release. This should help physicians update records in real time, access critical information and transmit data to an off-site disaster preparedness storage database daily.

Patient experience is said to also benefit from the upgrade. Since much of an appointment is dependent on effective broadband speeds, faster connections should make for a smoother experience at the clinics, according to Comcast officials.

The technology upgrade would improve scheduling, viewing MRIs and X-rays and updating health records during exams, ultimately reducing wait times for visitors, the news release said.

“GVHC staff and providers situated across our Central Valley rely on high-speed connections to access and update patient information in a secure fashion in the organization’s Practice Management system, as well as access Internet resources for insurance verification,” said Tony Ortiz, a network administrator at GVHC, in the release.

Comcast officials explained in the release that reliable and efficient technology is critical to health care providers in today’s increasingly digital environment.

The boost, as explained in the release, is so significant that, based on current utilization averages, GVHC will use only about 25 percent of capacity. The additional bandwidth available will ensure that GVHC is able to scale in the coming years as health information technology continues to grow and advance.
