Police investigate Merced infant’s death
Merced police are investigating the death of a 3-week-old girl.
Police responded about 8:48 a.m. Tuesday to Covington Creek Apartments, 925 Loughborough Drive, and contacted a family with an infant who was not breathing, Capt. Tom Trindad said.
Officers and firefighters attempted life-saving efforts and the infant was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Merced where she was pronounced dead, the Police Department said in a news release.
Trindad said initial reports from investigators indicate the death appears to have been accidental, but declined to elaborate, citing a need to protect the inquiry.
“Detectives will learn more once an autopsy is performed,” police said in the statement. “After all of the facts are gathered, the report will be sent over to the District Attorney’s Office for their review.”
Trindad said the autopsy had not been scheduled as of Wednesday.
Police are asking anyone with any information regarding this incident to contact Detective Joseph Deliman at (209) 385-6992, or the Merced Police Department Tipster Line at (209) 385-4725.
