Seven people displaced by north Merced apartment fire, battalion chief says

What started as a report of cypress trees on fire near Black Rascal Creek turned into an apartment fire on Sunday, according to Merced City Fire Department.

Merced police were responding to a call in the 3000 block of Santa Rosa Court about 6:23 p.m. when they saw the trees burning, according to Battalion Chief Jeff Horta.

Two engines and a fire truck responded to the flames that reached an apartment unit, displacing six adults and a child living there, according to Horta. Smoked billowed out of the building just north of Loughborough Drive.

No injuries were reported, he said.

The fire did some minor damage to a neighboring building, he said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
