Lecture series
Harvard University professor Doris Sommer will present UC Merced’s fourth annual Distinguished Lecture in the Humanities at noon Feb. 22 in the California Room on campus, 5200 Lake Road. The event is free and open to the public, but organizers ask those interested to register at the Center for Humanities website, crha.ucmerced.edu.
‘Inherit the Wind’
Tickets are on sale for a one-time performance of “Inherit the Wind” at 4 p.m., Feb. 28 in the historic courtroom of the Merced County Courthouse Museum, on 21st and N streets. Respecticon
Respecticon, a battle of the bands and sex-education event, is planned from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Main St. Along with music, the day offers a free lunch and lessons on body image, relationships and LGBT issues, among other topics. For more, email middlestatefeminists@gmail.com.
Uechi Ryu Karate
The city of Merced’s Recreation Department is offering Uechi Ryu Karate on Mondays and Thursdays for $45 per month. Ages 6 to 12 meet at 5:30 p.m. and ages 13 and up meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Rossotti Ed-Zoo-Cation Center, located at 1045 West 25th Street. Crab feed
North Merced Rotary’s 31st annual Crab and Pasta Dinner is 6 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Merced Fairgounds, 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Tickets are $50 and must be purchased from a North Merced Rotarian. No tickets at the door. For tickets, call 209-723-0064.
La Grange Valentine’s Day
Kick off Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, with a hearty breakfast. The La Grange Odd Fellows serve breakfast the second Sunday of each month. They have new breakfast hours: 8 to 11 a.m. The menu includes biscuits and gravy, sausage, ham and cheese omelets and French toast. Merced College’s 2015-2016 Performance and Lecture Series continues with “Going Home: One Man’s Journey to Save Lives,” which will be presented free to the public at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in the college’s Lesher Room 111. For more information, call John Albano at 209-386-6777.
Face of an Athlete – A photographic exhibit
The Merced County Arts Council invites you to the reception for Face of an Athlete – A photographic exhibit celebrating local athletes, by Merced photographer Jay Sousa on Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 in the Merced Multicultural Arts Center, 645 W. Main Street, Merced. The reception is free to the public. The exhibit can also be viewed in the Main Gallery of the Arts Center until April 15.
