A special ceremony this week in Merced will highlight those most affected by violence during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week.

Lisa DeSantis, Victim Witness Assistance Program coordinator for the Merced County District Attorney’s Office, is helping to organize a special ceremony for victims and their families.

“It’s our way of giving back to the community,” DeSantis said.

The ceremony will take place at noon Thursday at Veterans Memorial Park at M and 21st streets in Merced.

DeSantis encouraged participants to bring photographs of their loved ones to display on a tree planted in remembrance of victims.

About 100 people are expected to attend.

Merced County has been plagued by violence in recent years, reporting more than 30 homicides each year since 2013. Authorities have noted that violence has been increasing in the county at a time when such crimes have been declining in much of the rest of the state.

The Valley Crisis Center and at the District Attorney’s Office also will be accepting clothing donations for victims and their families.

“We need to work together to have and realize we all have a common goal,” said DeSantis.

She hopes the ceremony will bring comfort and a sense of unity because, she said, victims should not feel alone.

“One voice can make a huge difference to someone’s life, to this community,” said De Desantis.
