Playhouse to rock its way into a new season

A romp through the excess of hair bands that brought some flair to the 1980s is set to kick off the 23rd season of Playhouse Merced.

The premiere of “Rock of Ages,” a fast-paced musical filled with the era’s hard rock and heavy partying, is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at Playhouse Merced, 452 W. Main St.

Set in Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip, the musical is about following your dreams, and finding something better along the way. It features famous rock anthems and ballads from groups such as Whitesnake and Styx.

Hits from the decade such as “Sister Christian” from Night Ranger, “Juke Box Hero” from Foreigner and “I Wanna Rock” from Twisted Sister are just a few of the offerings.

In the musical, according to a news release, the 1980s rock lifestyle is fading. As corporate culture takes over venues and hangouts, the characters fight back in an attempt to hold onto their way of life.

“Rock of Ages” recently ended an almost seven-year run on Broadway, making it one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history, the news release said. It was written by Chris D’Ariezno.

Playhouse offers 7:30 p.m. showings on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sunday matinees, through Sept. 25.

“Rock of Ages” is recommended for mature audiences due to language and some subject matter, according to the Playhouse.
