Atwater police have announced they will be looking for impaired drivers throughout the city on Aug. 28, with plans for a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the city.

Police also did not disclose the time that checkpoint will be enforced.

The effort is part of an 18-day, high-visibility campaign called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” which is a partnership with the California Office of Traffic Safety to curb impaired driving from Aug. 21 to Sept. 7, according to a news release.

Funding for the special operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Police encourage anyone who drinks alcohol to designate a sober driver or call a friend or taxi for a ride. Party hosts should also provide plenty of food and nonalcoholic drinks for sober drivers.

Police also encourage party- or bargoers to step in when someone appears to be too drunk to drive. Drunken drivers can be reported by calling 911.
