Police: Man robs bank in Atwater
A man dressed in black robbed an Atwater bank Thursday with a hand-written note claiming he was armed with a bomb, the Atwater Police Department reported.
Just before 12:30 p.m., a man carrying an unknown object walked into the Merco Credit Union at 1655 block of Bellevue Road. In a written note, the man demanded cash be placed into an envelope. The note said he was armed with some type of explosive, Lt. Samuel Joseph said.
Police do not know if the object in his hand was actually a bomb.
The thief threatened to detonate the object if the tellers did not give him money, investigators said.
The man left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.
No injuries were reported.
About 10 minutes before the robbery, investigators believe the same man entered the BBVA Compass Bank, 1329 Broadway Avenue, and asked to make a deposit. He then told a bank employee he had forgotten his identification and left the bank, police said.
Officers described the man as a light-skinned male in his 20s, wearing a hooded black sweatshirt with a zipper, a black T-shirt, black pants and a black San Francisco 49ers cap.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Atwater Police Department at 209-357-6394.
