Rollover accident near Atwater sends two to hospital
A driver lost control of his car Monday while having a seizure, sending the vehicle careening off Highway 99 near Atwater, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The driver, Jesus Ruiz, 63, of Merced and passenger, Sandy Miller, 73, were both taken to an area hospital after first responders freed them from inside the car, which tumbled down an embankment and came to rest on its roof.
CHP officers responded just before 10:30 a.m. to the shoulder of the highway just south of the Westside Boulevard exit, according to Officer Moises Onsurez. Though the man and woman initially were said to have not answered to calls from first responders, their injuries were ultimately not considered serious.
Onsurez said about 100 feet of chainlink fence will need to be replaced where the car passed through before coming to a stop.
