Firefighters work to contain grass fire near Valley Children’s

A grass fire burning near Valley Children’s Hospital remained only 50 percent contained late Wednesday.

The 150-acre blaze was burning toward the San Joaquin River and the bluffs, east of Highway 41, Madera County Fire Chief Dave Allen reported earlier.

No homes were threatened and the California Highway Patrol had reported no traffic issues related to smoke in the area. Initial fire calls came in about 4:37 p.m.

A second fire was reported about 5 p.m. near Madera Community Hospital that grew into grass fires on Wednesday afternoon.
