Fuller students receive word shirts
First- and second-grade students received their Sight Word shirts at the September Pow Wow.
The Sight Word Club at Fuller School is a program that encourages students to learn to read sight words. Children need to be taught to read sight words as a whole unit as they often have irregular spelling patterns and cannot be blended by sounding out the letters. These words are used frequently in books and stories written for children at this grade level.
Students who are able to quickly read without hesitation the sight words on the list to first their parent, then their teacher and finally the principal, are then awarded their Sight Word T-shirts. Students and staff wear their Sight Word shirts on Mondays.
The Sight Word program begins at Stephens School where kindergarteners learn 30 sight words and continues at Fuller School. First-graders have a sight word list of 100 words and second-graders have a sight word list of 300 words.
Ability to read sight words is an important part of becoming a fluent reader. With the Sight Word Club, parents and teachers work together to help the students at Fuller School become successful readers.
