21-year-old woman shot in Merced

A 21-year-old woman was shot around 9:10 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of R Street in south Merced, police reported Tuesday.

The woman had just walked outside a residence when two men walked up to her and one of them opened fire, Sgt. Alan Ward told the Sun-Star.

“They didn’t say a word. They made no statements to her beforehand,” Ward said. “At this time, it does not appear to be gang-related. It seems pretty random.”

Police described the men as Latinos in their early 20s wearing gray, hooded sweatshirts. They left the area on foot, police said.

The victim was flown to a regional hospital. An update on her condition was not available Tuesday.
