The Atwater Police Department and the Merced County Sheriff's Department investigate the scene of an officer-involved shooting at the Winton Gardens apartment complex in the 3000 block of Winton Way, in Atwater, Calif., on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017.

A man shot and killed Tuesday by Atwater police has been identified as 18-year-old Ezekiel Juan Duran, the Merced County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday.

Duran was identified as the man who police said was armed with a handgun that he refused to put down despite commands from two police officers, who opened fire striking him in the at least twice. Duran was flown to a Modesto hospital where he later died, Sheriff’s Office investigators said.

The officer-involved shooting was reported around 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Winton Garden Apartments on Winton Way, across the street from Atwater High School. Officers were called to the second-story apartment after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots.

The sheriff’s office is leading the investigation into both the officer-involved shooting and the criminal investigation of the prior incident.

The Atwater Police Department will conduct an internal review of the incident.

One of Duran’s family members declined to comment Wednesday.

The names of the officers involved in the shooting have not been released. Both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in all officer-involved shootings.
