Do you know this man? Merced police seek public’s help in theft case

Merced police on Friday released video surveillance footage they said showed a man steal a package off the porch of a Merced home on Century Drive.

Investigators are hoping someone from the public will help them identify the thief.

“There have been multiple similar thefts in the last few weeks in north Merced,” police said in a news release.

The theft was reported at 4:52 a.m. Thursday.

“With the holidays around the corner, the Merced Police Department would like to encourage residents to take extra precautions with packages,” police said in a statement. “If you are expecting a package to be delivered, try to arrange to have someone home to receive the package.

“If no one can be at the residence when the package is delivered, try to remove the package from the front porch as quickly as possible. These types of thefts are a crime of opportunity for thieves,” police said. “If they see a package out in plain view for any period of time, the thief assumes no one is home and takes the package.”

Officers said these types of theft can be reduced when neighborhoods work together to combat crimes of opportunity.

“Everyone should be on the lookout for suspicious people in their neighborhoods,” police said.

If you see something suspicious going on in your neighborhood contact the Merced Police Department at 209-385-6912.

Merced Police are asking anyone with any information regarding this crime to contact Sgt. Curt Gorman at 209-385-4706 or the Merced Police Department Tipster Line at 209-385-4725. The public can send information via anonymous text messages to police department by dialing “TIP411” (847411) and including the word “Comvip” as the “keyword” in the text message.
