Atwater store robbed twice in four days

A man wearing black sunglasses robbed an Atwater grocery store Thursday, the second such theft at the market this week, the Police Department reported.

Lt. Samuel Joseph said a man entered the R-N Market, 231 Atwater Blvd., just after 2:30 p.m. Thursday and took an undisclosed amount of cash from an open register.

A store employee chased the thief to a nearby vehicle, described as a silver Ford Expedition. The getaway vehicle was last seen heading east on Broadway Avenue, police said.

No one was injured and no weapons were used during the robbery, police said.

The robber was described by police as a Latino; 5 feet, 8 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall; weighing 150 to 180 pounds. He wore a white and red “trucker-style” cap with a gray sweatshirt, black sunglasses and jeans.

The same store was also robbed Monday by a man who wore black sunglasses.

There was no word on whether police believe the same man may have committed both robberies.

In the earlier robbery,police said, the man grabbed cash from an open register and ran out of the store.

There were no weapons used and no one was injured.

Police described Monday’s thief as “a large-framed” Latino wearing a white T-shirt and tan pants, along with a brown beanie-style hat and black sunglasses.
