Police seeking public’s help in Atwater shooting
Atwater police are asking for the public’s help in locating people responsible for firing several shots from a vehicle early Friday morning.
Nobody was injured, but a mobile home and vehicle were struck by gunfire just after midnight Friday on Atwater Boulevard, Lt. Samuel Joseph said.
Police said two vehicles were seen traveling at high speeds down the same road, and at least three shots were fired from one of the cars, described as possibly a Geo Metro.
Officers believe the people inside the Geo Metro were targeting a man in a white vehicle when they opened fire. The driver of the white vehicle, whose name was not released, sped away onto Highway 99 and escaped, police said.
Police, a short time later, found a green Geo Metro on Westside Boulevard near Highway 99 they believe was the same one used in the attack. A .357-caliber handgun was found inside the car, and police learned the vehicle had been reported stolen.
No arrests have been made.
Police believe the incident may be gang related.
Atwater police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact investigators at (209) 357-6396. Tips are confidential, and callers can remain anonymous.
