Planada teenager identified as victim in deadly gang shooting in Merced County
A man shot Sunday night in Planada has died, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
The victim, a 19-year-old Everado Anguiano of Planada, was shot multiple times around 6:30 p.m. in the area of Plainsburg Road and Childs Avenue. He may have been riding a bicycle around the time of the attack, investigators have said.
He was flown to a Modesto hospital where he died around 9 p.m., Undersheriff Jason Goins said.
The undersheriff said it was too early to comment on many details of the investigation but said the case appears to been gang-related.
Deputies are searching for a car described only a black compact vehicle.
No arrests have been made and no suspect descriptions have been released.
Few details have been released as sheriff’s detectives investigate the case Monday morning. Officials have said it remains too early in the investigation to comment on any possible motives for the violence.
Anguiano’s death marks the ninth homicide of the year in Merced County and the second homicide case in the community of Planada. Two men were killed Feb. 1 during a shootout between rival street gangs near a popular taco truck on Highway 140. One man has been arrested in connection with the Feb. 1 slayings.
Goins said detectives are working to determine whether Sunday’s attack might be connected to other recent cases of gang violence, but said it’s too early to know.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 209-385-7444. Tips are confidential and callers may remain anonymous.
