Driver arrested on suspicion of DUI after crashing into Atwater canal, CHP says

An Atwater woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after crashing into a canal, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to a report of a traffic collision in the area of Atwater Boulevard and Bert Crane Road on Wednesday at about 9:48 a.m., according to Officer Eric Zuniga.

Leanne Edwards, 33, of Atwater, was driving an Acura sedan west on Atwater Boulevard. As Edwards attempted to turn south onto Bert Crane Road, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the empty canal, according to Zuniga.

Officers detected an odor of alcohol while speaking with the driver and she was arrested after an evaluation, Zuniga said.

The driver was not injured in the collision.
