Merced police on Wednesday provided an update to a dog mauling case that resulted in the death of a cat.

Earlier this week, police had posted pictures of a man and a woman on their Facebook page, asking the public for help in identifying them.

Police said the incident at Foothill Dr. and G Street showed the two dogs were off their leashes while the woman stood there during the attack.

Police updated their story Wednesday, saying the owner of the dogs made contact with the officers.

The department also stated the man who was shown in a photo on their Facebook page was determined to be a witness in the case and had “no legal standing to the dogs.”

The dogs were taken to the Merced County Shelter, where they were placed in mandatory quarantine, the post stated.
