Driver arrested after Merced police find semi-automatic gun inside his vehicle

A Friday night traffic stop in Merced led to the arrest of a driver after a semi-automatic gun was found in the vehicle, according to police.

Officers with the Merced Police Gang Violence Suppression Unit stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 600 block of E. Main Street at 10:22 p.m.

The vehicle was driven by Samuel Kailes, 21.

As the officers searched the vehicle, they located a semi-automatic gun. Kailes was arrested and booked at the Merced County Jail. He was charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, vehicle code violations and gang enhancements.

Merced Police are asking anyone with any information to contact Officer Joseph Opinski at 209-388-7846.
