Drugs found in car during traffic stop over cellphone leads to arrest, Merced police say

Police arrested a man found to be driving on a suspended license after they found drugs and money during a vehicle stop for using a cellphone while driving, according to authorities.

Just after 3:30 p.m. Friday, a Merced police officer pulled over a man who appeared to be using a cellphone while driving in the 1100 block of West Olive Avenue, according to a news release. Police said the officer observed the driver watching pornography from a cellphone connected to the vehicle’s dash.

During the stop, the officer identified the man as Bobby Yang by the man’s suspended California driver’s license. The vehicle was towed.

Prior to being towed, the officer searched the vehicle and found several baggies of methamphetamine, as well as heroin and an ecstasy pill, police said. Also found was a digital scale and $1,676 in cash.

Yang, 43, was arrested on suspicion of possession of narcotics for sale, transportation of narcotics, cellphone usage while driving and driving on a suspended license, according to authorities.
