Merced domestic disturbance erupts in shooting, police say. Suspect caught in Stockton

A domestic distubance Sunday night in Merced erupted into a shooting, police say, with the suspect arrested hours later in Stockton.

The incident happened just after 10 p.m. in the area of West 11th Street and Canal Street, according to a Merced Police Department news release.

Police said the 50-year-old male victim was found in the area being taken to a hospital by family.

Investigators learned the victim was attempting to remove the suspect, Sergio Jesus Munos, 28, from the property following a domestic dispute.

According to Sgt. Rey Alvarez, the victim was reportedly trying to defend a family member from Munos. Police said Munos then retrieved a handgun and shot the victim then fled.

Police learned that Munos was from the Stockton area, and police there arrested Munos at his home on Monday. Munos was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of attempted homicide as well as outstanding felony warrants out of San Joaquin County, Alvarez said.

No weapon has been recovered.

The victim was in critical condition Monday morning at a Stanislaus County hospital, according to Alvarez.
