Traffic stop leads to arrest after 5 pounds of meth is found in vehicle, CHP says

A traffic stop led to the arrest of a 36-year old Sacramento man after five pounds of a substance suspected to be methamphetamine was found in a gift bag inside the car, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 2020 Nissan Altima was stopped for following too closely at 7:10 p.m. Thursday near Russell Avenue on Interstate 5 in Fresno County. According to the CHP’s Merced office, the officer noted several factors that led him to believe the driver was engaged in criminal activity.

CHP K9 officer “Beny” was brought in to conduct an exterior sniff of the vehicle and alerted his handler to the odor of narcotics. The officer was granted written and verbal consent to search the car and found the suspected drugs, the CHP stated.

The driver, Miguel Perez, was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine for sale, sale or transportation of methamphetamine and driving without a license.
