Cal Fire snuffs out open flames in Merced, Madera, Mariposa
The state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has suspended outdoor burning in the unincorporated parts of Merced, Mariposa and Madera counties, according to a news release.
Vegetation in the region is particularly dry after four years of drought and the area has seen little measurable rain in recent weeks. Those factors lead to a greater chance that an open fire could get out of control, Cal Fire Unit Chief Nancy Koerperich said in a news release.
Outdoor burning by permit, campfires and outdoor smoking are prohibited, except within certain designated areas.
Campfires are allowed within the confines of a campground with established facilities for fires. Outdoor smoking is allowed within cars on established roads, rest stops or parking areas cleared of flammable vegetation.
Smoking is also allowed in established campgrounds open to the public, or within an area 3 feet in diameter that has been cleared of brush down to the soil.
State rangers or other authorized agents of Cal Fire may issue restricted temporary burning permits for people who can show that burning or use of open fire is essential for reasons of public health, safety or welfare.
Monday’s order is to remain in effect until the unit chief formally reinstates open fire privileges.
