Atwater police investigating possible hate crime against Buhach Colony High teacher

Atwater police have launched a hate crime investigation after reports that a teacher at Buhach Colony High School was subjected to racist slurs during a Zoom classroom event.

Police said the alleged incident against the teacher, who is Black, happened Thursday, according to a department news release.

Officers say they are investigating the circumstances behind the incident and collecting digital evidence to determine those who are responsible.

Police say the suspects could be charged not only with a hate crime, but with using a computer network to commit a crime.

“The Atwater Police Department is committed to fully investigating this incident and holding those involved accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” Chief Michael Salvador said in a statement.

“No one should be subjected to this type of behavior based on the color of their skin. Teachers provide a great service to our communities and should not be subjected incidents like this.”

After the incident first came to light last week, many in the Buhach Colony community condemned the hate speech.

Golden Valley High in Merced also experienced a similar incident last week against a Black teacher, prompting the school’s principal to call it an “act of hate.”

Police said Merced Union High School is fully coopering with the department’s investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information to call (209) 357-6384 and ask for Detectives Vierra and Aguilar. Tips are kept confidential and you can remain anonymous.
