Pedestrian dies after being struck by two vehicles in Merced. Police say one driver fled

Police are looking for one of two vehicles they say was involved in a fatal collision in Merced on Sunday.

At about 9:21 p.m., Merced police officers responded to the scene of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision in the 2200 block of G Street, according to a Merced Police Department news release.

According to Merced Police Sgt. Dan Dabney, a 45-year-old man believed to be a local resident was located unconscious with major injuries in the number two southbound lane of G Street near 22nd Street.

Riggs Ambulance Service and Merced City Fire personnel responded to the scene to provide medical attention.

The victim was transported to Mercy Medical Center Merced, where authorities said he died due to his injuries several hours later.

Police said the man was struck as he attempted to cross G Street heading eastbound in the middle of the 2200 block.

According to Dabney, the pedestrian was wearing black clothing and attempted to cross the street in an area that is not well lit. As he stepped into the street, he was struck by a 1996 Honda Civic traveling southbound in the number two lane driven by Eusebio Maya-Luna, 19, of Dos Palos.

The pedestrian was then struck by a second vehicle described as dark SUV traveling southbound on G Street. That driver fled the scene of the collision and was last seen traveling westbound on West 22nd Street. Maya-Luna stopped at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, Dabney said.

Neither alcohol or drugs appear to be a factor in the collision. Police ask anyone with information regarding the collision to contact the Merced Police Department Traffic Division at 209-388-7719.
