Pair arrested in Los Banos shooting
Two brothers from Los Banos have been arrested in connection with the shooting last month of a 20-year-old man, officers from the Los Banos Police Department reported.
David Javier Vazquez, 19, and Robert Luis Vazquez, 18, were arrested Monday by Los Banos police, Cmdr. Jason Hedden said in a news release.
A third man remains at large.
“My hope is that the third suspect will recognize his mistake, come forward, and accept responsibility, but until that time we will not stop looking for him,” Hedden said in the statement.
The victim, a 20-year-old Mendota man, was shot around 11:25 a.m. May 28 in the 1200 block of Maryland Avenue. He was shot at least one time in the arm, police said.
Police said the victim was confronted by three men in a silver- or gray-colored PT Cruiser
“The suspects exited the vehicle and confronted the victim, asking him what gang he claimed,” Hedden said. “The suspects began to assault the victim, kicking and punching him several times. During the assault, the victim was shot by one of the suspects.”
The Vazquez brothers remained in custody Thursday at the John Latoracca Correctional Center.
The Merced County District Attorney’s Office has filed charges of assault with a deadly weapon against both men, police said.
The third suspect was described by police as a Hispanic male, in his early to late 20s,between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall with a “stocky build.”
