Man accused of attacking CHP officer has history of resisting arrest, records show
A Livingston man arrested earlier this week on suspicion of slashing the face of a California Highway Patrol officer has a history of fighting with law enforcement, according to Merced Superior Court records.
The suspect, Raul X. Maldonado, in 2011 pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest. He was ordered to pay a $300 fine and serve three years of probation. He was initially arrested in the case on suspicion of battery on a peace officer, according to records.
Maldonado, 24, was arrested Tuesday on felony counts of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce great bodily injury, and misdemeanor counts of resisting a public officer and battery on a peace officer, according to booking records.
Livingston police say Maldonado attacked a CHP officer, slashing the officer’s face with a sharp object. The officer fired a shot, grazing Maldonado’s leg, police said.
Officers used Taser stun guns to subdue the suspect before taking him into custody. Maldonado received medical treatment before he was booked into jail, officers said.
The officer, whose name has not been released, is expected to make a full recovery, police said.
Police Chief Ruben Chavez said he could not elaborate on details of the investigation, including the type of weapon used during the incident.
Chavez said his department is investigating and said the CHP would also conduct an administrative review, which, he confirmed, is standard procedure in any incident involving officers using force or firing a weapon.
Chavez said the case against Maldonado would likely be sent to the Merced County District Attorney’s Office for review Thursday.
Maldonado remained in custody Wednesday on more than $600,000 bail, according to booking records.
