Merced police arrest suspect accused of assaulting man during road rage incident

A suspect accused of assaulting a man stemming from a road rage incident was booked into Merced County Jail on Sunday.

Anthony Zimmerman, 18, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to jail records.

According to the Merced Police Department, officers responded at 4:11 p.m. to the 1800 block of West Olive Avenue for a report of a fight in progress near a car wash.

Officers arrived on scene and located a 53-year-old man who sustained significant trauma to his head, according to a Merced Police Department social media post.

The victim told police he was struck several times in the head with a flashlight during the incident which stemmed from a road rage incident.

Authorities located surveillance footage that captured the incident as well as the make and model of the suspect vehicle. Using the information, officers were able to locate the vehicle as well as additional witnesses and determined Zimmerman was involved in the altercation.

According to police, Zimmerman was arrested after the victim identified him as the attacker during a photo line up.
