Human remains discovered near San Luis Dam in Merced County

Merced County sheriff’s detectives were investigating the discovery early Monday of human remains found in the western part of the county.

The skeletal remains were found by a group of fishermen around 2 a.m. Monday near Highway 152, near San Luis Dam, west of Los Banos, deputies said in a news release.

Detectives later discovered a human skull and other remains.

Deputies described the discovery as “suspicious” but said the investigation was in its early stages and few details were immediately known.

Sgt. Delray Shelton said it was too early to know whether the remains were that of an adult or child. He said investigators are exploring all possibilities in the case, including searching missing-person reports in hopes of finding a match.
