The man killed when he was crushed as he attempted to steal a catalytic converter has been identified, the Merced County Coroner’s Office said Wednesday.
Merced police were called about 1:15 a.m. Monday outside an apartment complex on Alexander Avenue near G Street after a car fell on a man suspected of the attempted theft, Lt. Joseph Perez said.
He was Joey Orlando, 37, according to the coroner’s office. His city of residence was not immediately available.
Perez said Orlando was using an “old style scissor jack” so police believe it likely tipped over as he tried to cut the valuable catalytic converter.
Emergency crews arrived but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
