Subway robbery suspect jailed

An Atwater man was jailed Sunday in connection with a robbery at a Subway, police reported.

The sandwich shop was robbed about 5:30 p.m., Merced police Sgt. Tony Aponte said in a news release. Witnesses described the suspect as a man wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans, a purple beanie and armed with a knife.

A Merced officer spotted a man matching that description later in the 100 block of East Donna Drive. The officer, along with an off-duty officer, detained the man. Witnesses identified him as the suspect involved with the Subway robbery. Police later identified the suspect as 32-year-old Alar Jamar Voncel McCray.

Officers searched McCray and found the stolen cash from Subway. The knife was found tossed in a backyard, police said.

McCray was booked into the Merced County jail on suspicion of armed robbery and resisting arrest and is being held in lieu of more than $50,000 bail, jail records show.
