A pedestrian died Sunday after being struck by multiple vehicles on Highway 99 in Merced County, according to authorities.

About 6:23 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officers responded to a call about a pedestrian who was struck by vehicles on the highway south of Plainsburg Road, according to CHP Sgt. Daniel Bowen.

Authorities said it appears the man was driving a Honda Civic north on Highway 99 and was involved in a collision with a big rig. For unknown reasons, the man ran across the northbound lanes and into the southbound lanes, where he was struck by several vehicles, according to the CHP.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bowen said that while some of the involved parties remained on scene and cooperated with officers, two vehicles believed to have hit the man are being sought for a hit-and-run collision. Authorities described the vehicles as a blue Kia sedan and a Hyundai of unknown color.

Both vehicles are believed to have sustained front-end damage and were last seen headed south on Highway 99.

Anyone with information is asked to call the California Highway Patrol at 209-356-2929.
