Gustine police conducted a traffic safety operation Tuesday, resulting in 68 citations issued and three arrests.

There were also 18 warnings and three vehicles towed, according to Officer Eddie Gonzales of the Gustine Police Department.

The operation was held in partnership with the Merced County CITE (County Integrated Traffic Enforcement) Team, Gonzales said.

Officers from the Gustine, Atwater and Merced police departments and the California Highway Patrol deployed across multiple locations.

According to a news release, the operation concentrated on:

  • School zone enforcement at Gustine High School, Gustine Middle School and Gustine Elementary School.
  • Crosswalk safety enforcement at key high-traffic intersections.
  • Speed enforcement patrols along Highway 33, Highway 140, Sullivan Road, Hunt Road, and the Gustine Airport corridor.

“The goal of this detail is to reduce crashes, improve safety around our schools and address ongoing concerns raised by our community,” Gonzales said in a news release. “By partnering with our allied agencies, we’re able to saturate critical areas and make an immediate, positive impact on roadway behavior.”

The operation targeted violations including speeding, distracted driving, failure to yield in crosswalks, seatbelt violations and others, police said.

A total of 16 personnel and 11 enforcement vehicles participated in the operation.
