Merced County sheriff announces arrest in double homicide from 2022
A 30-year-old Las Vegas man has been arrested in connection with a double homicide committed in 2022, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
On Monday, detectives from the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Bureau, with assistance from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, arrested Justin Vanrassan on homicide-related charges.
“This arrest marks the culmination of a three-year investigation and brings long-awaited progress and closure to the victim’s family,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
The homicides took place on Franklin Road and Santa Fe Drive in Merced County’s Beachwood area, just outside of Atwater, in July of 2022.
The victims were Ruben Coronado, 23, of Lathrop and Eli Correa, 24, of Modesto, the sheriff’s office said.
According to previous Merced Sun-Star reporting, callers reported that multiple shots had been fired by suspects in one vehicle toward four occupants in another. The Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened around 11 p.m. July 2, 2022.
Deputies arrived on scene and located three shooting victims. Correa and Coronado were pronounced dead at the scene. The third shooting victim, a woman, recovered from her injuries.
