Merced police detectives continue to investigate a drive-by shooting that seriously wounded two young men on Friday night.

Two employees of Little Caesars were shot outside the pizza restaurant at West 16th and G streets, Sgt. Christian Lupian of the Merced Police Department said Monday.

Both victims, ages 18 and 19, suffered serious gunshot wounds.

Police were called to the scene at around 9 p.m. Friday after shots were reported. When they arrived, police found the two victims inside the restaurant.

Officers and medical personnel rendered aid, and the victims were flown to a Modesto hospital. As of Monday morning, they are in stable condition and expected to survive, Lupian said.

According to the investigation, the two employees were in an alleyway next to the restaurant dumping trash when a vehicle pulled up and the occupants fired multiple rounds.

Around 70 bullet casings were located at the scene, Lupian said.

After being shot, the employees were able to run back into the restaurant.

Police did not provide any information on potential suspects or any description of the vehicle involved.

Lupian said the shooting could be gang-related, and that the victims were targeted.

Police are asking anyone with information related to the incident to contact Detective Levi Crain at 209-388-7754 or 209-769-0340. Individuals wishing to remain anonymous may contact Merced Area Crime Stoppers at 209-726-8477.
