Police in Elko, Nevada, are investigating a murder-suicide that involved a father and his 11-year-old son, who is believed to have lived in Merced at one time.

Police in Elko say Giovanni Perez, 37, shot his son, Callan Perez, 11, inside a bathroom at the Elko Regional Airport on Monday afternoon. The man then killed himself.

According to Fresno-area TV station KMPH, “The child who was shot and killed was originally from Merced at one time, but not this school year.”

According to Elko police, the two were traveling together when their rental vehicle became disabled outside Winnemucca, Nev.

They were towed to Elko to get another rental vehicle.

“Giovanni shot Callan for an unknown reason,” Elko police said in a Facebook post. “Giovanni exited the restroom and shot himself near the ticket counter.“

Elko is in northeastern Nevada.
