CHP in Merced warns potential car buyers not to purchase a stolen vehicle
The California Highway Patrol in Merced is warning potential car buyers to be careful when purchasing a used vehicle.
Recently, a CHP officer conducted an enforcement stop on a Honda Accord and discovered the vehicle was reported stolen and had its vehicle identification number switched.
“They thought they were getting a great deal on a Honda Accord,” the CHP said in a Facebook post. “Instead, they were driving a stolen vehicle. ... Unfortunately, we’re seeing more cases like this.”
Officers have recovered several VIN-switched vehicles over the past few months, the post said.
If you purchase a stolen vehicle, you will lose the vehicle and the money you paid for it. The National Insurance Crime Bureau provides a free VIN lookup tool online.
