Merced County Sheriff’s Office warns about phone scammers. What to know
The Merced County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about phone scammers who are claiming to be members of the office’s staff and requesting money.
According to a sheriff’s office Facebook post, it has received several reports of similar scam calls. In those calls, the scammers claim that a loved one has been arrested and needs a payment for an ankle monitor.
The scammers request the person on the line to send them $900 and use pressure tactics to get the person to send them money.
Scam calls like these are becoming increasingly common, the sheriff’s office said.
The Merced County Sheriff’s Office said it never calls to demand payment over the phone.
If you receive such a call, you should hang up immediately and contact law enforcement, the post said.
