A suspect has been arrested in a shooting early Saturday morning outside a downtown bar, police say.

The shooting was reported just after midnight outside O’Ryleigh’s bar in the 1700 block of Canal Street, Sgt. Bobby Chapman told the Sun-Star.

The victim, a 26-year-old woman, had been standing outside the bar smoking a cigarette when someone drove by. An occupant of the vehicle shot at the woman, striking her in the leg.

Police responded, and the woman was taken to a local hospital.

Chapman said a witness provided information that helped police identify a suspect. Officers located the suspect’s vehicle parked a short distance from the bar. The witness reported seeing someone hide something in the bushes, and police said they found a handgun.

Police also said they found the car’s keys and live ammunition near the vehicle.

Later Saturday morning, police served search and arrest warrants at a residence in the 1800 block of Merced Avenue.

Police arrested Jaime Villanueva, 20, who was booked into Merced County Jail on suspicion of assault with a firearm. He remains in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail.

The motive remains under investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information to call (209) 385-4702 or the department’s automated tip line at (209) 385-4725. Tips are confidential, and callers can remain anonymous.
