One injured, one arrested in DUI crash in Atwater
A 33-year-old Merced County man was injured Wednesday after he was involved a crash with an alleged drunken driver, the Atwater Police Department reported.
The victim, Shaun Clayton, was riding a blue 2007 Yamaha motorcycle about 9:10 p.m. in the 700 block of Bellevue Road when he was involved in a crash with a white 1990 Nissan Maxima, Lt. Samuel Joseph told the Sun-Star.
Clayton was taken to an area hospital with unspecified moderate injuries, Joseph said. An update on his condition was not available Thursday.
The driver of the Nissan, Juan Carlos Valencia, 24, of Ballico, was believed to be intoxicated, police said.
He was arrested at the scene after his blood-alcohol level was measured at about .19 percent, more than double the legal limit, police said.
Valencia was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of drunken driving causing injury, a felony. He was still in custody Thursday evening on $200,000 bail, according to booking records.
Joseph said the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, including the direction of travel and speed of each vehicle involved, remained under investigation Thursday.
