Man shot dead in Delhi, deputies report

A man was shot and killed early Sunday on Jeffrey Court in Delhi, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The victim, described only as a Latino male, was found in the front yard of a home just after 4 a.m. He was pronounced dead at a hospital, deputies said in a brief news release.

The victim’s identity has not been released. No arrests have been reported.

Sgt. Delray Shelton said information was limited as the investigation was in its early stages.

The death marks the 21st homicide this year in Merced County and the sixth such case in the sheriff’s jurisdiction. It is the second homicide of 2015 in Delhi.

The homicide also puts Merced County on pace to match last year’s homicide totals when the county set a record high of 32 violent deaths, surpassing the previous record of 28 set in 2013.

Last year’s 21st homicide was recorded Sept. 13, 2014, according to Sun-Star archives.
