Man shot and killed in Winton

A man was shot and killed early Friday in Winton, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The victim’s identity was not released.

Sheriff’s deputies responded just after midnight to a home in the 7300 block of Edyth Circle in Winton where they found a man had been shot at least one time, Sgt. Delray Shelton said.

The man succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

No arrests have been made.

Investigators declined to comment on many details of the case, but said they believe the death to be gang related, saying “gang politics is being looked at as a possible motive.”

Shelton said several people may have witnessed the shooting, but that has not helped the investigation.

“Detectives are experiencing resistance and lack of cooperation,” he said.

It was the second homicide of the week in a rural community in Merced County. Juan Reyes, 23, of Delhi was gunned down early Sept. 20 in front of his home in the 16000 block of Jeffrey Court in Delhi. No arrests have been made in that case.

Friday’s death marked the 22nd homicide of the year in Merced County.

Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact sheriff’s detectives at 209-385-7445 or at crimestoppers.com.
