Man shot and killed Friday in Winton, 2nd homicide of day
A 21-year-old one man was shot and killed Friday night in Winton and teenager was shot, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department confirmed.
The victim was identified as Jerman Gaspar of Winton. Authorities also confirmed a 14-year-old male from Winton was also shot and taken to a Modesto hospital, Sgt. Delray Shelton said.
Deputies responded just before 8 p.m. to the area of Winton Way and Walnut Avenue after receiving reports of gunfire that left one person dead and another injured, authorities said.
No arrests were reported. A description of possible suspects was not released.
Few details were immediately available as the investigation was just getting underway.
It was the second homicide of the day in Winton.
Shelton said it was too early to comment on the possibility of any connections between the shooting Friday night and the one reported earlier the same day, just after midnight.
The death earlier on Friday was reported in the 7300 block of Edyth Circle in Winton. No arrests have been reported, but investigators have said that incident was likely gang related. That victim’s identity was also not released Friday.
A total of four people have been shot and killed this year in Winton, including the two on Friday. Two others were shot and killed April 6 when multiple people opened fire in the 6800 block of Walnut Avenue.
A total of three homicides have been reported this week in Merced County.
Juan Reyes, 23, of Delhi was gunned down early Sept. 20 in front of his home in the 16000 block of Jeffrey Court in Delhi. No arrests have been made in that case.
Friday night’s incident brings the total number of homicides this year in Merced County to 23.
