Merced stabbing victim expected to recover

Merced police say a 33-year-old man who was stabbed in a gang-related attack Saturday night is expected to recover.

Officers responded to the area of 18th and N streets at 6:45 p.m. after someone reported hearing a man yelling for help. The caller told police the man said he had been stabbed, according to a Merced police press release.

While ambulance personnel treated the injured man, he told officers the assailants were two Latino men on bicycles who had confronted and stabbed him, while yelling out the name of a Merced street gang.

Witnesses reported seeing the attackers riding their bicycles on N Street toward 19th Street. After receiving emergency medical treatment at the scene, the victim was flown to a Modesto hospital.

Police said the victim’s condition had stabilized as of Monday.
