Livingston man arrested in fatal hit-and-run
A 30-year-old Livingston man suspected of driving away from the scene of a fatal accident surrendered late Tuesday to the California Highway Patrol, authorities said.
Sharanjit Singh-Kailey identified himself as the driver who struck and killed a 30-year-old Merced man Monday evening, Officer Moises Onsurez said.
The victim was identified Wednesday as Shaun Patrick Baum, according to the Merced County Coroner’s Office.
Baum was hit about 7:13 p.m. Monday as he walked along Ashby Road in the Beachwood-Franklin area of unincorporated Merced. Investigators said Baum was wearing dark clothing and walking north on the dark, rain-slicked roadway at the time.
Kailey said he was the driver of the blue 2000 Honda Accord believed to have hit the man, Onsurez said. Officers did not comment on what caused the accident or say why Kailey may have left the scene before authorities arrived.
Kailey was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of hit and run causing death, a felony. He posted a $50,000 bail bond and was released early Wednesday, according to booking records.
“We’d like to thank the community for their assistance and are still looking for witnesses who may have observed the collision,” Onsurez said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Brian Carr at 209-356-2969.
