Merced man stabbed, girlfriend arrested

A 31-year-old Merced man was stabbed in the back Thursday while walking in the area of 23rd and N streets, the Police Department reported Friday.

Dominique S. Sims, 25, who police described as the victim’s girlfriend, was booked into the Merced County jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. She was still in custody Friday with bail set at $30,000.

The victim told police he’d been walking home around 10:30 a.m. and was “jumped by unknown persons and stabbed,” Capt. Tom Trindad said in a news release.

However, shortly after the incident, police said, officers received a call from Sims, who told investigators she stabbed the victim in self-defense.

She was interviewed by Detective Chris Russell at her home in the 2300 block of K Street. “The detective determined that there was enough to arrest her for the aggravated assault,” police said in the release.

Officers said the case remains under investigation.

Anyone with any information regarding this incident is asked to contact Russell at (209) 385-4707, or the Merced Police Department Tipster Line at (209) 385-4725. The public can send information via anonymous text messages to the department by dialing TIP411 (847411) and including the word “ComVIP” as the “keyword” in the text message.
