Man arrested after police standoff in Merced
A police standoff ended over the weekend with one man in custody on domestic violence and aggravated assault charges while investigators seized more than 15 pounds of marijuana, the Merced Police Department reported.
Miguel Manzo Lupian, 36, was arrested Sunday morning at his home in the 400 block of Serano Court in Merced after officers with the Merced Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics team negotiated his surrender, police said in a news release.
No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported.
Merced police responded at 8:11 a.m. Sunday to Manzo Lupian’s home after receiving a report of a domestic-violence assault and battery.
“During the course of the investigation officers learned that the responsible party in the assault and battery was also wanted by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office for an aggravated assault with a firearm in 2005,” police said in the statement.
“The victim of the assault and battery said that her husband, Miguel Manzo, may have a .22-caliber handgun in his bedroom,” according to the police statement.
Manzo Lupian shut his garage door and refused to come out to talk with officers, police said.
The Merced Police Department’s SWAT team assumed command of the scene because of the possibility of Manzo Lupian being armed. The SWAT team’s armored vehicle pulled to the front of the residence, and Manzo Lupian agreed to surrender, police said.
Officers later discovered about 15 pounds of marijuana hidden in a crawl space in the ceiling of the home, police said.
Manzo Lupian was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of domestic violence, the felony warrant and possession of marijuana for sale. He posted bail and was released Monday morning, according to booking records.
